সহস্রমল্ল থেকে আজকের শাসমল
"সহস্রমল্ল" থেকে অপভ্রংশে "সাসমল" এবং তা থেকে বানান বিভ্রাটে আজকের "শাসমল।" বলছি, "শাসমল" পদবির কথা। ভারতের শ্রেষ্ঠ মল্লবীরকে একসময় "সহস্রমল্ল" উপাধিতে ভূষিত করার রেওয়াজ ছিল। ফার্সিতে বলা হতো "রুস্তম-ই-হিন্দ।"
"সহস্র" মানে এখানে সংখ্যায় এক হাজার নয়, এর মানে বহু সংখ্যক। যেমন, গুরুজনরা ছোটদের আশীর্বাদ করে বলতেন বা এখনো বলেন, শতায়ু হও। এর মানে, দীর্ঘজীবি হও। এর মানে একশো বছর পর মরে যাও, এটা কখনও বোঝায় না।"সহস্রমল্ল" ঠিক সেইরকম অর্থ বহন করে।"মল্ল" মানে পালোয়ান। তবে আবার সূক্ষ্ম বস্ত্রকেও "মল্ল" বলা হয়। হিন্দিতে তা থেকে হয়েছে "মলমল" (মসলিন)।
তবে "শাস" শব্দ থেকে "শাসমল" কথাটি আসতে পারে, যার মানে---মল্ল নিয়ন্ত্রক। সোজা কথায়, "শাস" থেকে "শাসন" বা নিয়ন্ত্রক। সুতরাং, সাসমল বা শাসমল, বানান যাই হোক না কেন, কথাটি অবশ্যই ক্ষমতাবাচক একটি শব্দ। মেদিনীপুরের প্রথিতযশা স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামী দেশপ্রাণ বীরেন্দ্রনাথ শাসমল তাঁর নিজের পদবির বানান "শাসমল" লিখতেন। কলকাতার একটি রাস্তার নামের বানানেও লেখা আছে, "দেশপ্রাণ বীরেন্দ্রনাথ শাসমল রোড।"
উপরের আলোচনা থেকে বোঝা গেল, শাসমল পদবিধারী ব্যক্তিদের পূর্বপুরুষরা শাসন ক্ষমতায় ছিলেন। কিন্তু তাঁদের সেই গৌরবময় অতীত এখন শুধুই স্মৃতি মাত্র। সহস্রমল্লদের উত্তরাধিকারীদের ক্ষাত্র রক্ত এখন যেন ঠাণ্ডা।
অবশ্য বীরেন্দ্রনাথ শাসমল চিরদিন মাথা উঁচু করেই বেঁচেছিলেন। এমনকি, মৃত্যুর আগে পর্যন্ত বলে গিয়েছিলেন, তাঁকে যেন মাথা উঁচু অবস্থাতেই দাহ করা হয়। সেটাই করা হয়েছিল। তাঁর মৃতদেহ কলকাতার কেওড়াতলা শ্মশানে মাথা উঁচু করে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা অবস্থায় দাহ করা হয়েছিল। এর নাম ক্ষাত্র তেজ। কিন্তু এরপর আর এ বিষয়ে দ্বিতীয় উদাহরণ পাওয়া যায় না।
