৭১২ খ্রিস্টাব্দে মহম্মদ বিন কাশিমের সিন্ধু অভিযান বহু চর্চিত একটি ইতিহাস। কিন্তু তার আগে দুশো বছর ধরে দক্ষতার সঙ্গে বিদেশি হানাদারদের আক্রমণ প্রতিরোধের কথা অনেকের কাছেই অজানা। যে সব ভারতীয় বীররা এই আগ্রাসন ঠেকিয়ে জন্মভূমিকে সুরক্ষিত রেখেছিলেন, তাঁদের নামগুলি হারিয়ে গেছে ইতিহাসের পাতা থেকে, তবে রয়ে গেছে দুশো বছর ধরে তাঁদের বীরত্বের সফল প্রতিরোধ, যার ফলে সিন্ধু অভিযানের আগে বিদেশি হানাদাররা বার বার পরাজিত হয়ে ফিরে গেছে, ভারতের মাটিতে আঁচড় কাটতে ব্যর্থ হয়েছে প্রতিবার। সেই অজানা ইতিহাস ছড়িয়ে রয়েছে ভারতের উত্তর-পশ্চিম সীমান্ত অঞ্চলে। সেসব জানতে আমাদের সেখানেই যেতে হবে আজ। চলুন, যাই ভারতের উত্তর-পশ্চিম সীমান্তে ভারতের বীরদের দুশো বছর ধরে আক্রমণ ব্যর্থ করার ইতিহাসের খোঁজে।
শুরুতেই ভারতের উত্তর-পশ্চিম সীমান্ত অঞ্চলের ভূগোলটা জানা জরুরি। আরবদের সিন্ধু অভিযানের আগে ভারতের এই উত্তর-পশ্চিম সীমান্তে ছিল তিনটি শক্তিশালী রাজ্য---সিন্ধু, কাবুল ও জাবুল। এর মধ্যে বৃহত্তম ছিল সিন্ধু, যা বিস্তৃত ছিল উত্তরে পঞ্জাব, পশ্চিমে বোলান গিরিপথ এবং উপকূলবর্তী মাকরান ও পার্বত্য রাজ্য কিক্কানা ( বর্তমান বালুচিস্তান ও তার সংলগ্ন অঞ্চল) ছিল সিন্ধুদেশের অন্তর্গত। আর বর্তমান কান্দাহার প্রদেশ তখন পরিচিত ছিল "জাবুল" বা "জাবুলিস্থান" নামে। অন্যদিকে, কাবুলকে বলা হতো "কাবুলিস্থান", যা উত্তরে বিস্তৃত ছিল বামিয়ান পর্যন্ত। আর বর্তমান আফগানিস্তান তখন ছিল "গান্ধার", যে গান্ধারদেশের রাজকন্যা ছিলেন মহাভারতের দুর্যোধনজননী গান্ধারী এবং এই গান্ধারের পশ্চিমে কম্বোজ রাজ্যটিও তখন ছিল ভারতবর্ষের অংশ। কিক্কানা অঞ্চলের সাহসী জাঠ সম্প্রদায়ের যোদ্ধাদের পাহারায় সুরক্ষিত ছিল বোলান গিরিপথ। আর এর আরও উত্তরে কাবুলিস্থান ও জাবুলিস্থানের ভারতীয় সেনাবাহিনীর সতর্ক পাহারায় ছিল দুর্ভেদ্য খাইবার গিরিপথ। এভাবেই নিশ্চিদ্র নিরাপত্তার বলয়ে মোড়া ছিল ভারতের উত্তর-পশ্চিম অঞ্চলের সব ক'টি প্রবেশপথ।
পশ্চিমদিক থেকে ওপরের অঞ্চলে প্রবেশের জন্য ছিল মাত্র চারটি পথ---খাইবার গিরিপথ, বোলান গিরিপথ, মাকরান উপকূল পথ ও সমুদ্র পথ। অনেকে এর সঙ্গে গোমাল গিরিপথকেও প্রবেশপথ বলে থাকেন। তাহলে গিরিপথ দাঁড়ালো তিনটি---খাইবার, বোলান ও গোমাল গিরিপথ। আরব বাহিনী ওপরের সবকটি পথেই বার বার ভারত আক্রমণ করেছে, কিন্তু প্রতিবারেই ভারতীয়দের কাছে যুদ্ধে হেরে ফিরে গেছে। স্থলপথ থেকে জলপথে আরব নৌ-অভিযান ব্যর্থ হয়েছে।
স্থলপথে আরবদের ভারতের আফগানিস্তান অভিযান ব্যর্থ হলে তারা সমুদ্রপথে আক্রমণ করে এবং খলিফা ওমরের সময় (৬৩৪-৬৪৩ খ্রি: ) আরব বাহিনী সমুদ্রপথে আক্রমণ করে দেবল বন্দর। আল্-বিলাদুরির "চাচনামা" অনুসারে, ভারতীয়দের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধে পরাজিত হয় আরব বাহিনী এবং আরব সেনাপতিও নিহত হোন।
পরবর্তী খলিফা আলী ৬৬০ খ্রিস্টাব্দে ভারতের বিরুদ্ধে এক বিরাট অভিযান পাঠান। আরব বাহিনী বর্তমান বালুচিস্তানের কিক্কানা পর্যন্ত অগ্রসর হয়। এবারেও ভারতীয় যোদ্ধাদের হাতে আরব বাহিনী শোচনীয়ভাবে পরাজিত হয় এবং বহু সংখ্যক আরব সৈন্যসহ সেনাপতিরাও নিহত হোন। যদিও আল্-বিলাদুরি তাঁর "চাচনামা"য় এই যুদ্ধ সম্পর্কে জানাচ্ছেন, আরবরা বিজয়ী হয় কিন্তু খলিফা আলীর নিহত হবার সংবাদ শুনে ফিরে যায়। কিন্তু ঐতিহাসিক ড: রমেশচন্দ্র মজুমদারের মতে, এ হলো পরাজয়ের অপমান ঢাকার ব্যর্থ চেষ্টা।
তাঁর মতে, ---
"During the next caliphate, that of Ali, a great expedition was sent against India...The people of this country made a brave stand and routed the Muslim Army. The leader of the Muslim host was killed together with all but a few of his soldiers....This is the version of Al Baladhuri. The Chachnama, on the other hand, relates, that the Muslims obtained a victory at Kikkana, but turned back on hearing of the murder of Ali. This seems to be only a thin pretext for hiding the defeat and disgrace, and the version of all Baladhuri seems to be confirmed by later events."
এভাবেই ভারতের উত্তর-পশ্চিম সীমান্ত অঞ্চলে আরব অভিযান ব্যর্থ করে দুশো বছর ধরে স্বদেশভূমিকে নিশ্চিদ্র নিরাপত্তায় রেখেছিলেন এ দেশের বীর যোদ্ধারা। পরবর্তী পর্বে আমরা সেইসব ব্যর্থ বিদেশি অভিযানের ঘটনা তুলে ধরবো।
