গভীর রাতে ঘুমের মধ্যেই চলে গেলেন প্রাক্তন টেনিস কিংবদন্তি আখতার আলি
ক্রীড়া জগতে নক্ষত্র পতন। প্রয়াত ভারতীয় টেনিসের কিংবদন্তি আখতার আলি। মৃত্যুকালে তাঁর বয়স হয়েছিল ৮১ বছর। শনিবার গভীর রাতে ঘুমের মধ্যেই শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেন আখতার আলি।
দীর্ঘদিন মূত্রনালি ও কিডনির সমস্যায় ভুগছিলেন কিংবদন্তি আখতার আলি। গত ২৯শে জানুয়ারি উডল্যান্ডস হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করানো হয়েছিল তাঁকে। শনিবার দুপুরে হাসপাতাল থেকে সুস্থ হয়ে বাড়িও ফিরেছিলেন তিনি। তবে শনিবার গভীর রাতে ঘুমের মধ্যেই প্রয়াত হলেন এই টেনিস কিংবদন্তি।
টেনিস কিংবদন্তি আখতার আলির প্রয়াণে গভীর শোক প্রকাশ করেছেন রাজ্যের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। সকাল বেলায় টুইট করেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী।

পঞ্চাশ ও ষাটের দশকে ভারতীয় ডেভিস কাপ দলের নিয়মিত সদস্য ছিলেন আখতার আলি। টুর্নামেন্টে ভারতের হয়ে খেলতে নেমে ৯-২ জয়-পরাজয়ের রেকর্ড রয়েছে আখতার আলির দখলে।
রমানাথন কৃষ্ণণ, নরেশ কুমার, প্রেমজিৎ লাল, জয়দীপ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের মতো টেনিস তারকাদের সঙ্গেও একসময় খেলেছেন আখতার আলি। ১৯৫৫ সালে তিনি জুনিয়র জাতীয় চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপ জিতেছিলেন। ২০০০ সালে অর্জুন পুরস্কার জিতে নেন তিনি।
টেনিস থেকে অবসর নেওয়ার পরেও ভারতীয় টেনিসে কাজ করেছেন আখতার আলি। ভারতীয় টেনিসের একঝাঁক তারকা রমেশ কৃষ্ণন, বিজয় অমৃতরাজ, লিয়েন্ডার পেজ, সানিয়া মির্জার সঙ্গে কাজ করেছিলেন।
