মহাত্মা গান্ধীর নীতি অনুসরণকারী সুন্দরলাল বহুগুণা সত্তরের দশকে পরিবেশ সুরক্ষার ব্যাপারে অভিযান চালিয়েছিলেন। এরই মাঝে, তিনি চিপকো আন্দোলনও শুরু করেছিলেন। উত্তরাখণ্ডের গাড়োয়াল হিমালয়ে ব্যাপকহারে গাছ কাটা শুরু হয়েছিল। ১৯৭৪ সালে সুন্দরলাল বহুগুণার নেতৃত্বে অহিংস পদ্ধতিতে গাছ কাটার বিরোধিতা শুরু হয়। এই বিরোধীতায় স্থানীয় মহিলারা গাছের সঙ্গে সেঁটে (হিন্দিতে 'চিপকে') দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল। এই পদক্ষেপের পরেই, সারা বিশ্বে এই আন্দোলন 'চিপকো আন্দোলন'রূপে পরিচিতি লাভ করল।
